Art.1 looks to the Democratic Party, ‘But the alliance is about to change’

Covid, EU state aid: France and Italy have given more (ANSA)

The numbers do not give him the power to impose, but Roberto Speranza does not want to play the part of the one who is there waiting for the Democratic Party to bring Article One with it as it comes. The rift that led to the split in 2017 “is overcome”, therefore “joining” with the dem “yes, even immediately and without fear, but to change”, clarifies the Minister of Health closing the congress of his party, which confirmed this secretary with unanimous vote (except one). And then he explains: the progressive alliance of which Pd and Articolo Uno can be part of the M5s “will have to put the social question at the center of everything, which asks for answers immediately”. If Enrico Letta’s party remains the privileged interlocutor, there is also harmony with the Five Stars. Thanks to an intervention that touched on all the more “progressive” themes among those dear to the Movement, Giuseppe Conte was greeted with warm applause and long hugs at the Article One congress.
Pier Luigi Bersani explains the path to be taken with the Democratic Party: “Letta has expressed the will to take a step forward, but we have to work on it. We propose a new social project. This means putting oneself on the left seriously and not chasing after objectionable centrists. the conditions we are asking for do not mature by the end of the year, we will see electoral agreements in the progressive field. If, on the other hand, the space for a political novelty opens up, we are eager to evaluate them, we will take a new path “.
The dubious centrists that Bersani does not want to chase are, however, those with whom Letta believes he has to deal – those of Italy alive, Action, More Europe – for a center-left alliance as wide as possible. In short, there is still no agreement between the components on the boundaries of the coalition. And here comes the question of the electoral law. If Enrico Letta was not unbalanced, so did his deputy, Peppe Provenzano, who – as well as Article One – called for a proportional law and also a return to a form of public financing of the parties. Even Massimo D’Alema, whom the Democratic Party does not particularly like, said he shared “the idea of bringing the experience of Article One into the process of rebuilding a strong democratic left”.
The latest arrival in that part of the camp was warmly welcomed. Conte spoke, choosing his words carefully: “There is a way to take this path together, to be progressive together, we have already experienced it in Conte 2”. In front of his more leftist allies, he then clarified the position on the vote in France: “I find it shameful the attempt to attribute lepenist sympathy to the M5s”, a party of “xenophobic inspiration”. Then he talked about the minimum wage, Ius Scholae, citizenship income. With two clarifications that may not have been too popular at Palazzo Chigi: “Nobody questions the Europeanism of the Movement, but it is a critical Europeanism, not a fideistic one”. And in Ukraine “we cannot engage in a frenzied arms race or in the path of supplying ever heavier and more offensive armaments”. A passage, the latter, which did not out of tune at the Article One congress. “Helping Ukraine to make peace – said Hope – not to make more war”.
The attendance ended with an eye to April 25 – “the feast of all Italians” – the vote of 2023 and also to the past. With the notes first of Bella Ciao, in the version of the Modena City Ramblers, and then of the Internazionale, with the delegates standing and singing. Someone with a closed fist.
