Bundestag Vice President Göring-Eckardt travels to Moldova

Bundestag Vice-President Katrin Göring-Eckardt (Greens) will visit Romania and Moldova, which border on the Ukraine, from May 6th to 9th. The Tagesspiegel learned this from parliament, and a spokesman for Göring-Eckardt confirmed the travel plan on request.

The Green politician will first travel to Romania, where a meeting with the Romanian Parliament Speaker Ion-Marcel Ciolacu is planned. Among other things, it should be about the war in the neighboring country. Thousands of Ukrainians have fled to Romania, and there is an autochthonous Romanian community in south-western Ukraine.

Göring-Eckardt is scheduled to arrive in the Moldovan capital Chisinau on May 7th. Various talks are planned there, including with Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita.

The European Union is considering expanding military aid to Moldova. This was said by EU Council President Charles Michel during a visit to Chisinau on Wednesday in the presence of Moldova’s President Maia Sandu. Brussels is examining what military support could be given to Moldova. This is in addition to the logistics and cyber defense assistance promised by the EU.

Moldova is a former Soviet republic where a form of Romanian is spoken by the majority. The Transnistria region, which is supported by the Kremlin, split off from the then new state 30 years ago after brief fighting. In Transnistria, which is largely isolated internationally and is surrounded by Moldova and Ukraine, the majority of people speak Russian.

More on the Ukraine war on Tagesspiegel Plus:

In Transnistria, where 1,500 Russian soldiers are stationed alongside their own armed forces, there have been several explosions in recent days. Observers fear that the government in Moscow could use this to open a new war front in south-western Ukraine.

Moldova is one of the poorest countries in Europe and has taken in tens of thousands of refugees from Ukraine. Approximately 3.4 million people live in Moldova – not including Trans-Istria, where almost 600,000 people are said to live. Unlike Romania, Moldova is neither a member of NATO nor the EU.
