Majority fibrils over former Ilva, government “saved” by FdI

A steel giant that is difficult to manage, very difficult to ‘reconvert’ and which still divides politics. The future of the former Ilva of Taranto stops again in Parliament and splits the majority on the vote for reclamation. In the Senate M5s, Pd and Leu vote on a 5-star amendment that opposes the government’s proposal to move the 150 million planned for reclamation to the production of the Italian steel mills, the heirs of ArcelorMittal. Forza Italia and Lega instead line up with the executive. It ends in a draw – 14 yes and as many no – and the majority saves by 3 votes. They are those of Renziano Mauro Marino and two senators of the Brothers of Italy who abstain. A vote that sends the coalition into fibrillation a few hours after the vote on the Ukraine decree bis in the Chamber, to which the amendment of discord is connected. So much so that in order not to have any surprises, the government is thinking of asking for the trust to secure it.

There is no peace or future for the plants in the Tamburi district at the moment. For politics it is a strong discontent that overwhelms the parties again. “It is the second time that the majority split and in the end there is no vote in favor of Ilva: a fundamental thing”, Matteo Salvini thunders recalling the chaos experienced in February in Montecitorio over the Milleproroghe decree, even then on Ilva. The Northern League is not there and calls into question the prime minister: “Now I expect Draghi to intervene on his return from America”. Clarification is also urgent among the dem who admit that they were wrong to give in to the “forcing” desired by the center-left ally and in dissent with the input given by the leaders of the Democratic Party. It is Senator Stefano Collina who makes the mea culpa, taking responsibility for it publicly: “The choice arises only from the desire not to break a political alliance that supports a candidate for mayor in the Taranto area”, he justifies himself. Instead, the Movement goes to the attack. “Stopping the amendment is a slap in the face in Taranto and a very negative signal for the country. Therefore we will present it again in the next Aid decree”, announced Mario Turco, vice president of the M5s and first signatory of the amendment.

As in February, the second round of the former Ilva is also played at night. Only the ring changes: this time it is the Industry and Finance commissions of Palazzo Madama, put to work ‘exceptionally’ on Sunday evening, for the Ukraine bis decree. It is yet another measure launched by the government to stem the effects of the war, starting from cutting excise duties on fuels to controlling prices, granting more powers to the Guarantor, the so-called price mister. The tight deadlines – the decree must be converted by May 20, and must first pass to the Chamber – force the ‘extraordinary’ session. But it is on Ilva that spirits stir. The 5 Stars attempt the blitz by asking to vote on their amendment (despite the government’s contrary opinion) which plans to cancel the proposal of the Ministry of Economic Development to allocate funds for reclamation to decarbonization projects. The 5S put their foot down: “The decarbonization project, as it stands, is indefinite. We want clarity on the size of the funds, on the real economic needs and the preventive impact on the environment and health”, is their mantra.

Eventually they convince Dem and Leu to follow them. The tie – together with the ‘parachute’ of the abstentions – makes the move fail but certifies yet another fracture in the ruling coalition. Andrea de Bertoldi of FdI highlights it: “We have chosen to abstain also to plastically demonstrate the splits that exist in the majority on fundamental issues”. And for Marino di Iv it is a sign that “the electoral frenzy is too much and aims to stimulate an authoritative government like that of Draghi in order to get back in the polls”. For the pentastellati it is a bitter mouthful to swallow.
