Odessa mayor recognizes Azovstal fighters as heroes
The Ukrainian soldiers holed up in the Azovstal steelworks in the port city of Mariupol are real heroes for the mayor of Odessa. “In my opinion, Mariupol saves not only Odessa, but all of Ukraine”, said Hennady Trukhanov, according to the Unian agency, on Saturday night. “Because this selflessness shown by our military in Mariupol is a true example of heroism.”
Although the port city of Odessa is still under repeated fire from Russian missiles, the Residents still relatively safe weigh. “Because there (in Mariupol) it’s literally not about life anymore, it’s about death.”
After weeks of fighting the Russian attackers, the last defenders of Mariupol have entrenched themselves in the Azovstal steelworks. Previous attempts by Kiev to withdraw freely, possibly only for the seriously wounded, have been rejected by the Russian military. Rather, the Russian military leadership is demanding the surrender of the defenders. (dpa)
