Stop children – mothers in prison, the first ok arrives from the Chamber

Energy, Melons:

No more prisons for small children, children of imprisoned mothers: the first approval in the House arrives with 241 votes in favor and 7 against. The process of the bill is progressing, which aims to promote the model of family homes and to exclude that mothers and cohabiting children under the age of six remain imprisoned.

The proposal for the “Protection of the relationship between inmates mothers and minor children” – first signed by the deputy dem Paolo Siani (rapporteur Walter Verini) – was today under discussion in the Chamber of Deputies. The aim – as explained by Siani himself – is to overcome the legislation in force, the one that a decade ago established the Institutes of attenuated detention. If the new law also had the Senate’s okay, mothers who have a child up to 6 years old would be placed in protected family homes, “where the child has no perception of living in a prison, can grow better and have better relationships with his mother, who is certainly more serene and more ready to change and redeem herself “, because” the development of a child’s brain is faster in the first two years of life and is very much influenced by the environment in which he lives. And he will be positively affected if the environment is stimulating, while if he grows up in a prison his brain will only have toxic effects. “

Waiting for the passages to the Senate and then back to the Chamber, a further step is taken, therefore, towards the direction indicated also by the Minister of Justice Marta Cartabia: no more children in prison. By approving the Siani law, the prohibition of the application of precautionary custody in prison also for pregnant women would be made absolute but at the same time, in the presence of precautionary needs of exceptional importance, recourse to attenuated custody institutions for detained mothers is still envisaged (ICAM) .
