battle of figures between Nupes and the presidential majority

The Nupes does not take off after the final publication of the results of the first round of the legislative elections on Sunday. The union of the left, first in the lead, finally failed in second position (25.66%), just behind the presidential majority, credited with 25.75% of the vote. Figures disputed by several executives on the left who accuse the Ministry of the Interior of “tampering” for not having correctly added up all the votes of the left.

“It is clear that there is a doubt about what Darmanin is doing with the results. Everyone understands that they are bad losers. We cannot have the morals of the Banana Republic”, fumed Jean-Luc Mélenchon Monday in front of the headquarters of LFI, directly targeting the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin.

The “Nupes” label, shunned by some candidates

At the ministry, they say they stick to the lists of declared candidates. As for the boss of the LREM deputies Christophe Castaner, he denounces a “conspiracy theory” of the Insoumis. In a nocturnal tweet, Manuel Bompard, Nupes candidate in the Bouches-du-Rhône, argued that “the Nupes achieves 6,101,968 votes (or 26.8%)”, accusing the Ministry of the Interior of attributing it to him. less “to artificially make Macron’s party appear in the lead”.

This difference in figures can be explained by the different labels chosen by certain candidates. Instead of presenting themselves under the banner “Nupes”, a handful of them chose the name “Miscellaneous left”. Asked by AFP, the ministry explained that it had “recognized as Various Left” three candidates “initially invested by Nupes” but then having “declared that it wanted to give up this nomination”.

“It’s not a game, it’s just our democracy”

In addition, some candidates from Corsica and overseas, territories not part of the national Nupes agreement, were not counted. In a press release, LFI calls on the media to set up “their own accounts”, and promises “a real independent electoral authority” if Nupes has a majority in the legislative elections.

“It’s not a game, it’s just our democracy,” argued Jean-Luc Mélenchon. For Christophe Castaner, Manuel Bompard “talks about people they support now when they did not support them two days ago”. A comment deemed “incredible” by the candidate Nupes who, in a new tweet, criticized the LREM deputy for “qualifying as conspirators those who just demand an exact presentation of the results”.
