Three more words – within the same symbol of the last political elections – to reaffirm the centrist and pro-European “pedigree” of Forza Italia. A little more than a month after the vote, Silvio Berlusconi’s party gets a makeover and adds to the 2018 logo – marked by the name of the group in the Tricolore characters and the name of the founder – the words “European People’s Party”, at the top . Nothing casual, especially politically. The new entry in the symbol is another way to strengthen the agreement with what is the first political force in the Strasbourg Parliament (the EPP), with which FI has been an ally for some time. And implicitly to mark the difference with Lega and Fratelli d’Italia, allies in Italy and divided in Europe.
“FI will always guarantee belonging to Europe, to the values of the West, to NATO and which looks to the US as its main ally in foreign policy”, Antonio Tajani points out. : in the party headquarters behind Montecitorio, the national coordinator unveils the new logo, previously hidden by a sliding panel. At the same time the hymn of FI starts, Tajani is approached by other blues who point to the symbol with a finger and the image runs live on Facebook, as well as immortalized by photographers and cameramen in the room. Then Tajani says: “In agreement with the popular family, we have decided to reiterate that in this electoral campaign there is a strong presence of a Christian, democratic, liberal, reformist, guarantor soul that makes explicit reference to the values of European popularism” .
But if the ways count, so do the times. Just when the field of moderates, dominated by Carlo Calenda and perhaps by Matteo Renzi, is organizing itself, the Azzurri strengthen their profile. Aesthetic and in content. “We are the real alternative center to the left, we are the center that refers to the values of European popularism”, insists Tajani, who is also vice-president of the EPP. And then teasing the possible third centrist pole, he adds: “The center is not a political agreement to have some seats in Parliament but a choice that is made 365 days a year”.
