Right to vote for foreigners, immigration law… Éric Ciotti bangs his fist on the table

It is a proposal that has stirred the right for several days and even Gérald Darmanin. The deputy of Vienne Sacha Houlié wishes to grant the right to vote to foreigners during municipal elections. A proposal to which is “totally opposed”, the deputy of the Alpes-Maritimes, Éric Ciotti. “For me, voting is linked to nationality. Voting is the expression of sovereignty. And this sovereignty can only belong to those who share the same community of destiny”, explains- it on Europe 1 at the microphone of Jeanne Baron. “I do not imagine that a foreigner can tomorrow come to weigh on the election of a legislator”, he adds.

Is it always to send the army in certain districts of the hexagon?

“There are neighborhoods in which one can wonder in what situation (the question asked was whether France is at war) we find ourselves. Nothing should be ruled out in the general mobilization of resources. It is not to put tanks in the neighborhoods, but to ensure that all the means of the State are mobilized”.

“One becomes French by the right of blood and not by the right of the soil”

For the candidate for the presidency of the Republicans, the vote is therefore linked to nationality. This is one of the reasons that prompted Eric Ciotti to propose a law so that one becomes French “by right of blood and not by right of soil”. But Éric Ciotti still opens a door for foreigners.

“What I would like to be sure of is that people who become French, (…) is that they totally adhere to the values of the Republic, that they know our language…”, specifies- he at Europe 1.

A brigade to control adherence to the values of the Republic?

Faced with this, how to ensure that foreigners who claim French nationality adhere to the values of the Republic? The answer is all found for Éric Ciotti: “The Republic must acquire the elements to verify precisely that nationality is the culmination of a journey of membership and love of France”, he explains. .

But the MP for the Alpes-Maritimes refuses to speak of a “control squad” and relies instead on the Canadian example: “In Canada, for example, there is a form of residence permit with points. We check only when a person applies for Canadian citizenship, whether they know the history or the language”.
