Jean-Luc Mélenchon promises “the general battle” and “a countdown” before dissolution

After two months of absence, Jean-Luc Mélenchon has not abandoned the conflictuality: from the Drôme and its “summer lecture halls”, he promised for the return to politics “the general battle” against the government, and estimated that a “countdown to the dissolution” of the Assembly had begun. He is no longer a deputy and did not participate in the July parliamentary session, but Jean-Luc Mélenchon keeps his hand with the Insoumis. In an improvised press briefing which eclipsed the debate between Minister Clément Beaune and MEP Manon Aubry in the media, the third in the presidential election (22%) promised the government “the general battle” at the start of the school year.

LFI, first opposition

Indeed, in his eyes “the government has decided to be frontal” by preparing “to govern with a blow of 49-3” without an absolute majority in a fragmented Assembly. But as “the last legislative elections in June do not conform to the state of the country”, “French political life is a countdown towards the dissolution” of the National Assembly and new elections. While the debate between Clément Beaune and Manon Aubry took place, who succeeded, in the main amphitheater of the summer university, to that between Minister Marlène Schiappa and MP Alexis Corbière. Two highlights to show that LFI is the first opposition.

Earlier at midday, Manuel Bompard, deputy and director of campaigns for LFI, declared that the “three subjects of the new school year are the climate emergency, the social emergency caused by inflation and the taxation of superfoods. profit”. But LFI does not want to content itself with parliamentary debates. “Leading the fight in Parliament is of equal importance with what we do outside institutions through mobilizations. You have to walk on your two legs, Parliament and outside”, argued the deputy and coordinator of the movement Adrien Quatennens in a conference of hurry.

A walk in October?

This is why LFI wants the New Popular Ecological and Social Union (Nupes) which it launched in May with the PS, EELV, PCF and Generations to deepen outside the hemicycle. She proposed that a march to demand wage increases to compensate for inflation be organized together with the unions in October. A first meeting of Nupes with the CGT, Friends of the Earth and Oxfam took place on Tuesday and will be followed by another on September 12.

“The arc of forces” of this march “is very broad and corresponds to the will of popular federation that Jean-Luc Mélenchon formulated” before the presidential campaign, rejoiced Adrien Quatennens. The 150 elected members of Nupes remaining the “minority”, “to win victories you have to put pressure on the street”, remarked Manuel Bompard.

Divergences and hegemony

Still, the parliamentary battle, the first vocation of Nupes, promises to be intense from October. Éric Coquerel will make the “flash mission” on the introduction of a tax on super-profits the main battle horse of LFI in the National Assembly. Some socialists and environmentalists were moved by the muscular method of the Insoumis in the hemicycle? “We are undoubtedly the most vocal opposition (…). But we have made a counter-proposal for a Nupes law. We will continue to do the work seriously”, underlined the deputy and coordinator of the Clémence program. Watched.

The president of the LFI group Mathilde Panot insisted: “What makes the strength of Nupes is both the 650 measures in common, and not being the same otherwise this coalition no longer makes sense.” At EELV, the PS and the PCF, which hold their summer universities at the same time, the time has come to guard against the risks of LFI hegemony. The three parties were skeptical about the perspective wanted by the Insoumis to ally with the Europeans of 2024, noting differences on Europe.

“Either the state of mind is to deepen the Nupes and we highlight the convergences, or it is to take all the examples where we do not agree 100%”, warned Manuel Bompard. “But you will find the same differences within an organization, and even between two people!”
