what are the issues around the first meeting on the future of the island?

Gérald Darmanin receives on Friday Place Beauvau a delegation of elected officials to discuss the institutional, economic and social model of Corsica, the first meeting of a cycle of eight meetings “without taboos” devoted to the future of the island of Beauty. . The Minister of the Interior, who had pledged in March to discuss the autonomy of Corsica, had set up a strategic committee in July on the future of the island, four months after the deadly attack in prison of the Corsican independence activist Yvan Colonna, sentenced to life for the assassination of the prefect Erignac.

What economic and social model for Corsica?

The discussions will focus from 10 am on the “economic and social model” of Corsica before addressing, in the afternoon, the various statutes of autonomy already existing in the Mediterranean. Gérald Darmanin has already discussed this Thursday with the deputy of Corse du Sud Laurent Marcangeli, who will participate in the meeting on Friday. “#Corsica must engage with the State in a reflection on its economic and social model”, tweeted the one who left his chair as mayor of Ajaccio after his victory in the legislative elections.

In a joint press release, the autonomist deputies Jean-Felix Acquaviva and Michel Castellani, the Europe-Ecology MEP François Alfonsi and the autonomist senator Paulu-Santu Parigi regretted that “two files of economic significance relate a significant gap between the speeches and the will displayed on the one hand, and acts of legislative and regulatory scope on the other hand”.

Concerning the price of fuel, they regret that “the state discount of 30 centimes” negotiated with the Total group, “creates a serious distortion of competition, contributing to bringing to their knees small and medium-sized independent groups in the territories, including the Ferrandi group in Corsica, with the risk of losing 150 jobs”.

Regarding “the application of the Corsican investment tax credit (CIIC), extended until 2023”, they regret that the State has “significantly reduced the possibility” of obtaining it. “This new reading hits hard on the island hotel industry, which is essentially family-oriented,” they say. They will expose these two files “as a priority on the table tomorrow in Beauvau”, awaiting “operational answers”.

“No taboo” during these consultations

This summer, Gérald Darmanin had argued that there would be “no taboo” during these consultations, in particular on an evolution towards autonomy, while setting two red lines: a Corsica which remains “in the Republic” and not to create “two types of citizens” on the island. The consultation cycle must be spread over a year, with one meeting every six weeks.

The second meeting will be devoted to “financial speculation, town planning and housing” and the third, scheduled “before the end of 2022”, to “the Corsican language and culture”, announced Gérald Darmanin. For each topic, it is planned to list the various statutes in force in the neighboring countries and to evoke the possible “evolutions” to bring to the statute of Corsica.
