As the price of energy increases in Europe, due to the war in Ukraine, the President of the European Commission has declared that it is necessary to “send your energy bills to Moscow”. Invited from Europe this Friday morning, France’s Insoumise MEP Manon Aubry returned to the issue of rising energy prices.
Last week, the MEP for France Insoumise (LFI) Manon Aubry questioned the President of the European Commission about energy prices, which are reaching record levels, in particular because of the war in Ukraine. “Send your energy bills to Moscow!” Retorted Ursula von der Leyen. Invited to Europe Matin this Friday, Manon Aubry returned to the subject of energy at the microphone of Dimitri Pavlenko.
Ursula von der Leyen “has no political answers to make”
“She is the main leader of the European Commission and she shows all her contempt for people who are going to struggle to pay their bills by telling them to send them to Vladimir Putin, as if she had no political answers to give. It is not true to say that it is only the fault of the war in Ukraine, it is the consequence of political and economic choices”, she affirmed. “On energy prices, there is what is called the European energy market which means that all energies are indexed to each other and therefore to the most expensive energy, in moment the gas”, she recalls.
According to Manon Aubry, the solution would be to “decouple energies from each other to ensure that energies that are produced cheaper are also bought cheaper. Spain did this by agreeing to get out of European rules “, explains the MEP. “We must also be able to say concretely, as a Member State, we are freezing prices and we are making contributions to the companies that have enriched themselves the most”, pointing the finger at the super-profits.
Putting super profits to work
“It was Total that made 16 billion euros in profits, a record in the entire history of the CAC40, all on everyone when we went to fill up with gas and paid a fortune. Everything this money was going into the pockets of Total, its CEO and its shareholders. We must put them to work”, she insists at the microphone of Europe 1. Moreover, the Nupes has launched a referendum within his party for super-profit taxation. A demonstration against the high cost of living and climate inaction will also take place on October 16, at the initiative of LFI, the Socialist Party and Europe Écologie-Les Verts
