On the occasion of the G20 in Indonesia, Emmanuel Macron will try to advance the Ukrainian cause with the international community. To achieve this, the President of the Republic will meet this Tuesday the Chinese President and the Indian Prime Minister. Objective: to convince that the war in Ukraine is not in the interest of these two powers.

Advance the Ukrainian file on the international scene: this is the will of Emmanuel Macron during this G20, which will take place this Tuesday and Wednesday in Bali, Indonesia. To achieve this, the President of the Republic will meet this Tuesday one-on-one with Chinese President Xi Jinping and then with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. So far, these two leaders have not condemned the Russian offensive in Ukraine.

Emmanuel Macron wants to try to “convince” his two interlocutors that the continuation of the war is not in their interest. To find a stable world as quickly as possible, the tenant of the Élysée will ask the Chinese president to “put pressure” on Russia so that it returns to the negotiating table and respects international law.

Bruno Le Maire and Catherine Colonna also on the trip

A colossal task, because China and India are not the only ones not to comment on the subject. Many countries of the South, including the host country of the G20, Indonesia, have also chosen not to criticize the action of the Kremlin. So, to persuade them, Emmanuel Macron will be accompanied to Bali by the Minister of Foreign Affairs Catherine Colonna and by the Minister of the Economy Bruno Le Maire.

But the Elysée ensures it: no one on the French side has planned at this stage to speak directly with the head of Russian diplomacy Sergei Lavrov. On the other hand, Emmanuel Macron will speak on the telephone in a few days with the great absentee of the G20: the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Poutine.
