When left and right meet: the protection of the constitution warns of violence at the demo in Leipzig

The Saxon Office for the Protection of the Constitution assumes that there will be a tense meeting situation on Saturday in Leipzig. The Tagesspiegel learned this from a spokesman for the authority. In particular, a direct violent confrontation between left-wing and right-wing demonstrators could pose challenges for the emergency services, according to the Saxon Ministry of the Interior.

Under the title “Ami go home” the “Compact” magazine has registered a meeting at 3.30 p.m. at Leipzig’s Simsonplatz in front of the US consulate. The orientation of the magazine is considered to be right-wing extremist, the magazine is under surveillance by the Office for the Protection of the Constitution.

The organizers around editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer have registered 15,000 participants with the Leipzig assembly authority. At the same time, however, Leipzig’s police spokesman, Olaf Hoppe, told the “Leipziger Volkszeitung” that the number of demonstrators was “low in five figures”.

At the same time, various counter-protests will take place throughout the city center of the largest Saxon metropolis. Among other things, the left initiative “Leipzig takes place” calls for a counter-demonstration, other action alliances want to move to the city of Leipzig on different routes from different parts of the city. According to information from the Tagesspiegel, arrivals from other German cities such as Berlin are also being organized for left-wing and radical left-wing scenes.

Security authorities expect the two camps to be confronted

In particular, the mixed situation between right-wing extremists on the one hand and numerous left-wing counter-events on the other hand calls the Saxon Office for the Protection of the Constitution into action. “It must (…) be assumed based on all experience that there will be violent clashes between left-wing and right-wing extremists before or after or even during the demonstration,” said a spokesman for the Tagesspiegel.

According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the calls for counter-protests are aimed in particular at mobilizing the “autonomous scene prepared to use violence throughout Germany”.

In the announcement by the “Compact” magazine around Jürgen Elsässer, the security authorities see above all an attempt to spread the narrative of an alleged occupation of the Federal Republic by the USA. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the aim of the agitation is “to find the dissatisfaction that exists in parts of the population for their anti-constitutional purposes and to connect with the middle classes.” The right-wing extremists “Free Saxony” are also mobilizing for Saturday in Leipzig.

Already on Friday evening, a mobilization event of the “Compact” magazine with its editor-in-chief Jürgen Elsässer will take place in the right-wing scene bar “Mittelpunkt der Erde” in Hoppegarten near Berlin.

Among others, the Brandenburg AfD member of parliament Lars Günther and the former parliamentary group leader of the Brandenburg Alternative, Andreas Kalbitz, have been announced as guests. Counter-protests from the left-wing scene are also expected in Hoppegarten.
