Home Secretary on the verge?: Nancy Faeser should decide quickly

A minister on the verge? The rumor that Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser wants to become Prime Minister in Hesse was early on. Now her comrades in the country have let it be known that they are confident that Faeser will be the top candidate in the state elections. As a result, speculation about their future is in full swing. Faeser himself is silent on this.

One thing is clear: the step back to Hesse would primarily involve risks for Faeser. In the election campaign, she would have an open flank. Her opponents could always accuse her of only becoming Federal Minister of the Interior in order to become better known. That would be a serious accusation.

Using a ministerial office only as a stepping stone – that would be dishonest. The mere suspicion would promote disenchantment with politics because it would confirm prejudices about politicians. He could also burden the traffic light: Chancellor Olaf Scholz would be there as someone who wanted to gain an advantage by hiring a party member.

And Faeser would also go into the open with the candidacy. If she were to fail as the SPD’s top candidate in Hesse, she would be so damaged that she would not be able to stay on as federal interior minister.

Therefore, she should decide quickly which way she wants to go and then communicate it openly. Voters have a right to know where they stand. In times of war and crisis, Faeser has a central job as the person responsible for internal security in this country.

If she goes to Hesse, a cabinet reshuffle will be necessary in the federal government. Scholz could use this for a larger-scale conversion to replace the wrong appointments in his cabinet. If Faeser stays, it would be better for her if she put an end to the rumors now. Then everyone will know that the Office of the Federal Minister for the Interior has her full attention – and that she doesn’t already have one foot in Hesse.
