An alliance between LR and the majority? For Gérard Larcher (LR), to ally, “is to disappear”

Senate President LR Gérard Larcher on Sunday rejected any idea of an alliance with the majority, believing that it would “disappear” for the party which elects its future president on Sunday. “To join forces is to dilute.

“For 11 years now, we have not been in power”

“It’s going to be our challenge, and I didn’t say it was easy,” he added. According to him LR must “tell people that we are going to deal with the subjects which worry them: sovereignty, identity, equity”. The mayor (LR) of La Baule Franck Louvrier pleaded in the JDD for his party to establish a “government contract” with Emmanuel Macron, in line with Nicolas Sarkozy, to whom he is close. “I do not share Nicolas Sarkozy’s choice,” replied Gérard Larcher.

The former President of the Republic “allowed us to get through an incredible financial crisis” but “for 11 years now, we have no longer been in power. not illegitimate,” he said. While Reconquest! celebrates its first anniversary this Sunday, Gérard Larcher estimated that its president, Eric Zemmour, “is trying to relaunch this movement in the perspective of the Europeans” but “I do not share an ounce of his approach”.

Differences on immigration

“We have fundamental differences” with the National Rally, he also assured, listing “the management of public finances”, “pension reform, openness to Europe and the world”. On immigration LR has “differences because zero immigration cannot exist”. But “I am not in favor of systematic regularization on the pretext of jobs in tension”, he added.

A bill expected in early 2023 should provide for a specific residence permit for jobs in tension but, according to Gérard Larcher, it would rather be “quotas” in this area. For her part, Marion Maréchal, vice-president of Reconquête!, estimated on franceinfo that “the future of the right will not go through the congress of Republicans or even through this movement”, “which does not mean that people from this movement will not participate in the future of the right”.

Faced with the double refusal on the LR side of alliances with the majority and with Reconquest!, “the risk is isolation”, she estimated.
