After solidarity with protests: Iranian judiciary seals soccer star Ali Daei’s shop and restaurant

The Iranian judiciary has closed the jewelry store and restaurant of soccer star Ali Daei in Tehran because he joined a strike called by the protest movement.

“Due to his collaboration with counter-revolutionary groups operating on the Internet to disrupt peace and trade, Ali Daei’s restaurant and jewelry store have been sealed,” the Isna news agency reported on Monday, citing the judicial authority.

A three-day strike was called for on Monday in online networks. According to Isna, Daei called on the online service Instagram to join the strike and closed his own shops.

Daei had supported protests

The former soccer professional said in November that he had received threats for supporting the protests following the death of Mahsa Amini.

The 22-year-old Kurd was arrested by the vice squad in mid-September for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly and died three days later. Her death sparked the largest sustained wave of protests in Iran in decades.

Despite being invited by the organizers, Daei also decided not to travel to the World Cup in Qatar as a guest. Daei said in November that he wanted to be “with my countrymen” and “express my condolences to all those who lost loved ones” during the protests. Because of his support for the protests, Daei’s passport was confiscated for a few days in October.

Daei was one of the first Iranian soccer players to compete in a European league. In Germany, he first played for Arminia Bielefeld and FC Bayern Munich before moving to Hertha BSC. Daei scored 109 international goals for Iran during his playing career – a mark that was only matched by Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo last year. (AFP)
