German Islam Conference: Don’t accept discrimination against Muslims

At the German Islam Conference on Wednesday in Berlin, Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) emphasized that Muslims are “naturally part of our society”. Faeser said she wanted to show the diversity of Muslim life in Germany more clearly. The training of imams in Germany was also on her agenda.

Muslims often experience double discrimination because of their religion and because they often have a migration background. “Society should not accept that under any circumstances”. What concrete political projects will follow from this was largely left open in the minister’s statements. Recommendations for action from the “Independent Expert Group on Muslim Hostility” are expected next summer.

Imam training in focus

However, Faeser made one point: “I want to gradually reduce the state posting of imams from abroad to Germany, with the aim of ending them.” Because most of the imams who preach in Germany are still trained abroad. The largest Islamic association, Ditib, in particular, has been criticized because its imams are usually paid by the Turkish state religious authority, Diyanet.

The Greens member of the Bundestag Lamya Kaddor welcomed the minister’s prioritization. “The fact that imam training is still the focus is correct. The training of imams in this country is important for the stronger homeland of German Muslims”. She also praised the minister’s tone: “It’s a refreshingly different tone than Horst Seehofer’s. The minister puts the focus on social policy and relies on participation,” said Kaddor.
