have the interviews with the unions been of any use?

For two days, Elisabeth Borne received one by one all the employers’ and employees’ unions at Matignon before the presentation of the pension reform. Unsurprisingly, the former support the reform, while the latter stick to their position of refusing any postponement of age. And yet, this last round of table allowed some clearings.

Two days of consultations, for not much? On Tuesday and Wednesday, Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne received one by one all the employers’ and employees’ unions at Matignon. If everyone remains on their initial positions, this round table seems however to have made it possible to know a little more about the intentions of the government. Even if the final arbitrations will wait for Tuesday, a scenario holds the rope. According to several union leaders, the government has definitely given up on raising the legal age from 62 to 65. “65 years old is not a totem”, had already warned Elisabeth Borne.

An acceleration of the Touraine law

“There will be a measure of age and a priori not a lot of suspense: it will be a 64-year-old, with the acceleration of the Touraine law”, revealed Cyril Chabanier, the boss of the CFTC, at the microphone of Europe 1. In the process of being applied, the Touraine reform is gradually lengthening the duration of contributions necessary for a full pension at age 43, by 2035. This date could therefore be brought forward. But for the trade unions, it does not matter. They unanimously reject any postponement of age and promise a month January very hot in the government, like the boss of the CGT, Philippe Martinez. “We are all determined that this law does not pass and therefore everyone mentioned that there would be mobilizations very quickly during January,” he said.

The next appointment is set for Tuesday, January 10, for the official presentation of the pension reform. It will then be presented to the Council of Ministers fifteen days later, on January 23.
