Christian Lindner tried to nip the debate about conscription in the bud. “This is a ghost debate,” tweeted the leader of the Liberals on Tuesday, recapturing his busy party friend Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann. The Chair of the Defense Committee had previously mused aloud about a comeback of conscription. “In principle, the end of compulsory military service only applies in peacetime. In the event of tension or defense, it can be activated again,” she told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”.
