Pension reform, immigration… The government is counting more than ever on Les Républicains to pass its bills without 49.3. But after being almost entirely emptied of its substance by Emmanuel Macron, the right is now reluctant to bring its votes to a president in difficulty. The LRs are on a ridge line with the government.
Strike, episode 3: the French are called to take to the streets on February 7 to challenge the pension reform. For the executive, time is crucial. The bill is being examined in public session from Monday, so it is counting more than ever on the support of the right in order to avoid a new recourse to 49.3.
The right is facing a major challenge: to continue to exist, while Emmanuel Macron is largely taking up his ideas on pensions. The Republican vote seemed certain after obtaining significant progress from the government. But nearly a third of LR deputies ultimately express new reservations.
Disagreement over the immigration bill
The right is in search of a compass, torn between its popularity in constituencies hounded by the RN and its long-term credibility. “We cannot not support it,” says Valérie Pécresse about the pension reform. The president of the Île-de-France region wanted to raise the retirement age to 65. “This reform is unfair”, responds for his part Aurélien Pradié, a figure of the new generation.
On the immigration bill, the whole of the right is against, because opposed to the creation of a residence permit for trades in tension, but also for political reasons. If she were to vote for the pension reform, she would then have to clearly mark her opposition to the government. The “at the same time” Macronian on this text gives him a good opportunity, even if LR can again find himself trapped in the executive if Gérald Darmanin were to accede to his immigration requests.
