Russia also says it is concerned about information according to which a provocation by Kiev with the use of radioactive materials could take place near Transnistria (pro-Russian separatist region of Moldova) where tensions are increasing. This was stated by Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, adding that the ports of the Odessa region, involved in the export of grain, could have been used for the delivery of radioactive materials to Ukraine.

According to the information in Zakharova’s possession, on February 16, containers with radioactive substances and written in English, coming from the territory of a European state, were delivered to the port of Chernomorsk, bypassing customs controls. “On February 19, similar containers containing the radioactive substance California-252, which is actively used to check the integrity of nuclear power plant reactors, were delivered to the port of Odessa on one of the cargo ships,” the spokeswoman said. “Radioactive monitoring system has been deactivated in port”.

The Moldovan government, for its part, called spokesperson Zakharova’s statements a “lie”. “State authorities are monitoring the situation and do not confirm the information released by the Russian side,” reads a message published on the Moldovan government’s Telegram channel.
