EUROPE 1 AND YOU – In Bordeaux, drivers find it difficult to respect the 30 km / h

Every day, Europe 1 looks at an idea or a problem in your daily life. In Bordeaux, some drivers have difficulty complying with the 30 km/h limit imposed on certain streets.

Will the use of 49.3 put France out of fuel? The announcement on Saturday by the CGT of the shutdown of the largest refinery in France, the TotalEnergies site in Gonfreville-L’Orcher (Seine-Maritime), marks a hardening in the conflict against the pension reform. In the Bouches-du-Rhône, a quarter of service stations lack at least one product.

To save fuel, some people decide to drive slower. In many streets of city centers, like Paris, Lyon and Nantes, the speed is now limited to 30 kilometers per hour. Some drivers, like in Bordeaux, have trouble playing the game.

“It’s impossible !”

“I try to be careful, but sometimes I drive a little over it”, explains a driver at the microphone of Europe 1. “It’s impossible to hold 30 kilometers per hour”, adds another.

These Bordeaux drivers are struggling to respect the 30 kilometers per hour in a city where this limitation is required in nine out of ten streets. Speed cameras also indicate speeding. These do not flash, but record speeds around 35 to 40 kilometers per hour on average.

Design the streets accordingly

According to Didier Jeanjean, deputy mayor, these data correspond to very specific axes: “What are these figures sanctioning? They come to say that we are right to put them in these places. These are streets which are not yet developed but now we have a road development program. We plan to increase the sidewalks. When we are in a constrained space, we drive more slowly”.

“Planting trees also changes the game. In a tree-lined street, where visibility is less, the speed changes. We remove the traffic lights. When there are no traffic lights, we don’t have the reflex to ‘accelerate when the light is orange so that it does not turn red,’ he continues. According to the elected official, the average speed in Bordeaux, beyond these particular streets, is 22 kilometers per hour, well below 30.
