Second day of the G7, expected the arrival of Zelensky

The second day of work of the G7 in Hiroshima has got underway. The proceedings began with the plenary session dedicated to economic resilience and security and in the afternoon it will expand to discussions with the leaders of the host countries, invited by the Japanese presidency to represent the perspectives and interests of the so-called Global South. Expected the arrival during the day, perhaps already in the afternoon, of the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky, who will have several meetings with the leaders. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has proposed welcoming the African Union to the G20, while she – speaking of Tunisia – has asked for “greater pragmatism” and “less rigidity”.

A working lunch will be dedicated to relations with emerging and developing countries which will be attended by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, both of whom arrived in Hiroshima yesterday evening: India this year has the rotating presidency of the G20 (to be held in September), and Indonesia that of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

The Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, also invited the leaders of Brazil (future G20 president), South Korea, Vietnam, the Cook Islands (Pacific Islands Forum president) as guests to the Hiroshima summit. , Comoros (turning president of the African Union), and Australia.

In the afternoon, the leaders of the G7 and of the host countries will discuss the great global challenges (food security, health, sustainable development and gender equality). A side event dedicated to the Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) will follow, an initiative that offers itself as an alternative to the new Chinese Silk Road. In the evening, a last session of work on climate, energy and
environment, extended like the previous ones to the representatives of the host countries and international organizations.
