Saxony’s seven-day incidence is over 1000 – the highest value since the start of the pandemic. Covid 19 intensive care patients were relocated to other federal states on Thursday, because the capacities in Saxony’s hospitals have run out.
The Free State is already in a partial lockdown, but the measures are not working as desired.
The Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer believes that bed occupancy with Covid-19 patients will increase dramatically in the next few weeks. “We are now preparing the transfer of patients to other federal states. This possibility still exists. We will use this also to take precautionary measures. We can hardly influence the current development. “
In view of the dramatic situation, Health Minister Petra Köpping (SPD) has spoken out in favor of a lockdown. This should not only apply to unvaccinated people, but to everyone.
“I don’t see any other option at the moment,” she said on Thursday in Dresden. The lockdown is “urgently needed”.
Ketschmer is also open to a lockdown. He told the Sächsische Zeitung: “The danger cannot be dismissed out of hand. It can only be prevented if there is a collective understanding and common awareness to avoid contacts and to adhere to the measures. “
The Minister of Education Christian Piwarz (CDU) supports his coalition partner in her move. He also considers a lockdown to be an option in Saxony in view of the infection rate. However, Piwarz advocates not closing schools and daycare centers.
So homeschooling should be avoided. Piwarz sees this as a compromise proposal for the next measures to curb the unmanageable infection rate in the Free State.
The Minister of Culture also points out the legal situation: The amended Infection Protection Act would have to be adapted in order to introduce a lockdown for all citizens. So far this has only been possible for unvaccinated people.
