A European crisis meeting took place this Sunday in Calais on the migration issue, in particular to fight against smugglers. It comes four days after the worst shipwreck in the English Channel: 27 people lost their lives. It took place without the British, who were excluded by France.
To avoid another tragedy, surveillance will be stepped up in the area. Gérard Darmanin announced it on Wednesday. A European plane will now help the French police day and night to fight against these clandestine crossings. A fight against the delivery of boats and engines for example. The Minister of the Interior also mentioned the absence of England. “This meeting was not anti-British, it was pro-European,” he said. “We have to work with our British friends and tell them a number of things”, such as “to help us collectively to fight better against smugglers”.

The minister also underlined “the English attractiveness” for migrants. “If migrants come here to Calais, Dunkirk, in the north of France, and risk their lives to cross the Channel, it is because they are attracted to England” with in particular a more interesting labor market according to Gérald Darmanin.
In this country, there is no longer a legal way to seek asylum. The Minister insisted several times: “We wish to work with our British friends, but in a serious framework and without being hostage to domestic politics.”
