Almost three quarters of Germans think negatively about Laschet

According to a survey published on Thursday, almost three quarters of citizens in Germany (73.9 percent) have a negative opinion of the Union’s candidate for chancellor, Armin Laschet. That is the result of a representative survey by the opinion research institute Civey for the newspaper “Augsburger Allgemeine”.

Almost half of the respondents even said that they think “very negatively” about Laschet. Only 14.7 percent rate the Prime Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia positively in his role as candidate for Chancellor. The rest is a tie.

Opinions about Laschet are divided even among voters of the Union – 43.9 percent support their candidate for chancellor, while 37.6 percent think negatively about him.

In the other political camps, the proportion of those who view Laschet critically clearly predominates – most clearly among the sympathizers of the Greens. 95.3 percent of those surveyed do not have a good image of Laschet. Just 1.5 percent rate the possible successor to Angela Merkel in the Chancellery positively. According to its own information, Civey interviewed 7502 voters between August 16 and 18.

Little trust in foreign policy competence

The Afghanistan crisis also put foreign policy back on the agenda. Here the German SPD candidate for Chancellor Olaf Scholz is much more competent than his competitor. That comes from a Civey poll of the “mirror”. According to the news magazine, 39 percent consider Scholz “very competent” or “rather competent”. Laschet only got 16 percent, just like the green candidate for Chancellor Annalena Baerbock.

Laschet’s party, on the other hand, has more confidence in the respondents in this field of politics. According to “Spiegel”, 37 percent said the CDU and CSU had the greatest competence in foreign policy. About 17 percent would say that about the SPD. According to the report, only around 9 percent of those surveyed see the Greens as a particularly competent party in foreign policy. (dpa, Tsp)
