Pensions, immigration … Why Macron wants to tackle sensitive issues before 2022

After the bitter defeat of the regions, Emmanuel Macron wants to show that he is reforming the country until the end of his mandate, in particular by tackling the issues of pensions and immigration. One way for him to seduce the right-wing electorate, which he will need to hope for re-election in 2022.

ANALYSIS

While the regional elections turned out to be a bitter failure for the presidential majority, how can Emmanuel Macron bounce back? In recent days, the President of the Republic has been suggesting that he does not want to learn national lessons from his defeat and that he wants to reform the country until the end of his five-year term. A way for him to stand out from his predecessors and to seduce the right-wing electorate in view of the presidential election of 2022 which is approaching.

To hear some close to the head of state, Emmanuel Macron has a very clear plan for the last ten months of his mandate: to act as if his possible second five-year term has started now. And therefore, to launch in the coming months, reforms of the beginning of mandate, those which are the heaviest politically.

It is for this reason that we have heard for a few days about the presidential desire to reform the pension system. A reform project typical of the beginning of a mandate.

The question of immigration

Another project: tackling the issue of controlling immigration. A subject that Emmanuel Macron wishes to cover before and during the French presidency of the European Union which begins in January.

The list is not exhaustive, but it shows that the host of the Élysée has a goal: through this transgressive strategy and through the reforms chosen… Emmanuel Macron wants to reach right-wing voters. Because he knows himself: without them, he cannot hope to serve a second term.
