The Pope: ‘No to female genital mutilation, a humiliating practice’

Sanremo, Biancheri:

“Today is the International Day against Female Genital Mutilation,” Pope Francis recalled at the Angelus. “There are about three million girls who undergo this surgery every year, often in conditions that are very dangerous for their health”, he stressed. “This practice, unfortunately widespread in various regions of the world – added the Pontiff – humiliates the dignity of women and seriously undermines her physical integrity”. The Pontiff also lashed out against the trafficking of persons. “Many girls, we see them on the streets, who are not free, they are slaves of the ‘dealers’, who send them to work and if they don’t bring the money they beat them. Today this happens, in our cities. Let’s think about it seriously”, he warned. Bergoglio. “In the face of these wounds of humanity – added Francis -, I express my pain and I urge those who have the responsibility to act decisively to prevent both exploitation and humiliating practices, which affect women and girls in particular” . And then a thought of Morocco and a country’s effort to save Rayan, the little one who fell into a well who was unable to survive.
