If anyone can show what it means to prove something to yourself, then it’s Sebastian Dietz. The 36-year-old Para shot putter won the bronze medal at the Paralympics in Tokyo on Monday. The board showed 14.81 meters after his longest throw – the season’s best and just three centimeters past his own Paralympic record from 2016.
Dietz not only had to fight in this competition, the last two years had been very difficult for him, “also for his head”. Problems in the thigh preoccupied the athlete, who starts for the BSG Bad Oeynhausen, he could not do many training exercises, but together with his trainer he could continue on the way to Tokyo. Even if he admits that he was “certainly very difficult” during this time, he never gave up and “had many people who stand by me”.
Keep going, getting up again and having your goal in mind – that’s how Dietz managed to get out of the hospital on his own in a very short time, three months, after a serious accident in the winter of 2004, contrary to all expectations. He exchanged football for discus and ball, was multiple world champion, Paralympics winner, third at the European championships this year, and even took part in the RTL-produced program “Ninja Warrior Germany – Germany’s strongest show” in 2016.
