Tennis: Federer ‘I’m confident, I could be back in the autumn’

Ukraine, Russia announces:

(ANSA) – ROME, MARCH 05 – “Gradually, I can begin to think about my return to the field”. Roger Federer confirms his desire to return to play, but does not deny the feeling of his friend and coach Severin Luthi, convinced that it is very unlikely that the Swiss will play Wimbledon next summer.

Federer allowed himself a day in Lenzerheide, on the Beltrametti slope where the Italian skier Federica Brignone has signed a small piece of history for our sport. Ninth place was enough for her, the worst seasonal result in the specialty, to become the first Italian to win the supergiant World Cup.

“I was a fast skier, but from 2008 I decided to give up this pastime until the end of my career – Federer explained in an interview with SRF TV – Then I thought it would only last another five years”.

Federer showed some apprehension in waiting for the skiers upon arrival, worried that they might fall and get injured along the way. Speaking of his injury and his third knee operation last fall, he was quite optimistic. “I am on the road to complete reconstruction, and I can slowly begin to think about my return – he said – A few weeks ago I had an MRI scan which gave very positive results. I am really confident”.

However, the Swiss is keen to emphasize that it will take time to see him again with a racket on the pitch. Federer doesn’t expect to be able to compete before the end of the summer, or the beginning of the fall.

It is therefore possible that he will play his first match since the defeat against Hubert Hurkacz at Wimbledon 2021 at the Laver Cup, of which he is co-organizer. The 2022 edition is scheduled in London and Rafa Nadal has already announced that the two of them will play doubles together again as in 2017. (ANSA).
