Schalke, Hertha and the coaching question

FC Schalke 04 has only suffered two defeats in eight competitive games this year. The last one last Saturday was highly dramatic. In pushing for the 4:3 winning goal against Hansa Rostock, Schalke were caught cold in the almost dissolved defense and actually lost in the sixth minute of added time. The result: a day later, coach Dimitrios Grammozis was fired. You have not seen any further development in the team, it was said as a reason on the part of the club management.

There is currently no sign of further development at Hertha BSC either. There was no win in nine competitive games in 2022 and the end of the cup derby against 1. FC Union. At the frightening 1: 4 against Eintracht Frankfurt at the weekend, some fans shouted “Korkut out”. So far they have not been heard. Fredi Bobic made it clear on Tuesday that he continues to have “complete trust” in coach Tayfun Korkut.

There are different approaches to assessing whether and when a change of coach makes sense. Schalke are determined to get promoted again and are already six points behind third place in the second division. For Hertha, on the other hand, only staying up in the league counts, at the moment the Berliners are separated by a point from a direct relegation zone. The situation is serious, but not hopeless.

Bobic himself brought Korkut

In Berlin, Bobic decided to hold the players accountable, knowing full well that all is not lost with another defeat next weekend and that he can still react. In addition, Bobic brought Korkut himself when Hertha was still relatively solid. To act again now would in a way also be a small self-dismantling.

Unlike Schalke, who can hardly afford to slip up in the promotion race. Setting the new impulse now (with the well-known Mike Büskens) is almost a kind of last chance. What both Schalke and Berliner have in common is that they consider their teams strong enough to play in the first division. Both of them just haven’t really been able to show it so far. At Schalke you think you know that it was the coach’s fault. Hertha has come to a different conclusion on this question – for the time being.
