Maignan replies to racists, FIGC opens an investigation

A middle finger, ironically shown by a monkey, against racism: it is Mike Maignan’s reaction to yet another vulgar episode of racism that, in spite of himself, sees him as the protagonist. The Rossoneri goalkeeper and teammate Tomori are still in the crosshairs who, in the excited final moments of the match against Cagliari, were the object of racist insults by some fans of the Sardinian team on which the federal agent of the FIGC, Giuseppe Chiné, has opened an investigation.

Contacts with Digos are already underway, images will be acquired and hearings of the members involved will be arranged. Maignan had indicated his ear during the last phase of the match, looking directly at the stands. A reaction first of the tensions between players, to then confess to the coach Stefano Pioli that “it is not possible to hear certain insults”. Milan officially took a stand late yesterday evening with a post on Twitter: “It was the day against racism but we still have a long way to go and we all have to do it together.”

Then in the night came the reaction of Maignan who posted on Instagram the photo of a monkey raising his middle finger, accompanied by the acronym NWA acronym for Niggaz Wit Attitudes, a historic American hip hop group. It is not the first time that Maignan has been the subject of racist insults; already in the Juventus Stadium match in the minutes before the kick-off a fan had targeted him. The chorus of condemnation also in this case is almost unanimous. Cagliari in the afternoon published photos of some fans at the stadium showing signs against racism. Milan, however, expects concrete consequences after last night’s episode and is waiting to know the results of the investigation.

An event that obscures, but only partially, the magical moment of AC Milan holding onto the top spot in the standings. The victory over Cagliari allows us to stretch over Inter and maintain the gap over Napoli now that there are eight games left to go to the end of the championship. A narrow victory, because the Rossoneri should score more to avoid risky finals, but a convincing performance for the many opportunities created and which saw a midfielder – Bennacer – sign the scoresheet. Many goals from all departments, but to dream until the end you need the strikers’ goals. Now with the break Giroud will be able to catch his breath and Pioli will be able to work with those who will remain at Milanello. Appointment on Wednesday to disconnect a little and free your mind before preparing the match against Bologna and the long race to the title.
