(ANSA) – INDIAN WELLS (USA), MAR 21 – American Taylor Fritz, number 20 in tennis in the world, won the Indian Wells Masters 1000 for the first time in his career, beating in the final 6-3 7 -6 (7-5) the Spanish Rafael Nadal, great favorite.

At the age of 24, the San Diego tennis player thus wins his second ATP title, after that of Eastbourne in 2019. He is the first American to triumph in the Californian desert since the time of Andre Agassi in 2001.

And he is above all the first this season to beat Nadal, who boasted 20 consecutive victories and was aiming for his fourth Indian Wells title (after 2007, 2009 and 2013). The Spaniard, who will have to wait to equal the record of 37 Masters 1000 titles held by Novak Djokovic, can console himself with the certainty of climbing to third place in the world from today.
