Olympic champion Megan Duhamel insulted by commentators as “Bitch from Canada”.

There are so many attributes to describe Canadian figure skater Meagan Duhamel. Olympic champion, for example, or world champion. The two commentators, Simon Reed and Nicky Slater, however, opted to insult the pair skater as “Bitch from Canada” instead.

The two commentators are to accompany the current figure skating world championships in Montpellier for the ISU. In front of the microphones, which were obviously switched on by mistake, the British defamed Duhamel as a slut and bitch.

The figure skating world association ISU drew consequences immediately afterwards and separated from the two. A statement from the association said: “We are shocked at the language used by the two commentators, which in no way reflects our views.

The ISU condemns in the strongest terms all statements of a discriminatory nature.” There is no place for harassing or insulting comments in sport. Therefore, the ISU suspended Reed and Slater with immediate effect; neither will cover future figure skating events for the ISU.

Duhamel himself had previously criticized the choice of Reed and Slater before the event. After the pair admitted they don’t watch figure skating that often, she tweeted, “There are better options ISU!”

She also commented on the insulting incident and reported that the two had personally apologized to her. Public apologies are no longer necessary at this point. “I appreciate and respect your apologies,” the post said. (tsp/dpa)
