Uefa-United Nations agreement, with football more sustainable cities

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 04 – Uefa and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (Unece) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the aim of showing how football and the organization of Uefa events can help cities to become more sustainable. To celebrate the agreement, a side event entitled “Football as an accelerator of change” was held at the Palais des Nations in Geneva with speeches by Michele Uva of Uefa, Olga Algayerova of UNECE and representatives of the city of Copenhagen, in within the broader Forum of Unece Mayors.

Also among the speakers were the mayor of Copenhagen, Sophie Hæstorp Andersen, whose city hosted Euro 2020 matches last summer and the head of Uefa women’s football, Nadine Kessler, who spoke about her experiences as a former player, passing then in the governance of football and inspiring more girls to devote themselves to sport.

UNECE is the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, which includes 56 UN member states and aims to promote pan-European economic integration. The objectives of the cooperation between Uefa and Unece will also seek to promote smart and sustainable urban goals, while facilitating the exchange of knowledge and promoting safe and sustainable mobility in urban areas.

The memorandum will also strive to ensure that investments in events by partners and hosts help make cities more sustainable. The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding also falls within the scope of Uefa’s sustainability objectives.
