Ukraine, Bach: “IOC support for athletes will not stop”

(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 22 – Ukrainian athletes who train abroad have not returned home after the invasion by the Russian army on February 24 last. Since the start of the war, the IOC has led the Olympic movement’s solidarity efforts to help the Olympic community in Ukraine.

The IOC set up a solidarity fund and provided, together with Olympic solidarity, one million dollars. The European Olympic Committees have provided funding for half a million dollars. With donations received from stakeholders in the Olympic movement, the fund now totals over $ 2 million and is in distribution.

The efforts of the IOC and the Olympic movement are coordinated by a task force led by Sergej Bubka. The support aims to allow Ukrainian athletes to continue taking part in international competitions. Not only financial aid, but also logistical and travel support. Bubka and Ukrainian Youth Minister Guttsait visited numerous training centers in Ukraine and met with athletes. The support the IOC is extending to the Olympic community in Ukraine is not unique, but is similar to the support extended to other members of the global Olympic community.

It is based on solidarity, one of the fundamental values for which the Olympic movement is fighting. “IOC support for the Olympic community in Ukraine will continue – explains Thomas Bach -.

We are offering to coordinate this initiative with the world Olympic community and are very confident that the great wave of solidarity with Ukraine will not end. We will encourage them to move forward and set an example “. (ANSA).
