To reveal the book, which will be presented on Friday 13 May at the Coni Hall of Honor in Rome, dedicated to the famous referee and sports manager. The event, organized by the Associazione Coni Lo Bello – Ideas for sport, culture, society, with the patronage of Coni, intends to celebrate the figure of one of the best-known Italian referees (who passed away on 9 September 1991) and who was also manager, Italian sports president and member of the Italian Parliament. The presentation will be attended by, among others, the president of Coni, Giovanni Malagò, exponents of the Italian Referees Association, the world of sport and journalism. The volume, edited by Rosario Lo Bello, features a preface by Gianni Minà and contributions by Enzo Pennone and Gaetano Sconzo.

Elegant, authoritarian, cold and technically very good: Lo Bello has always been unanimously considered the best Italian referee of all time. But his popularity went beyond mere ability on the pitch. More than a good referee, Lo Bello personified “the character referee”, who received applause even when he publicly acknowledged a mistake that would cost others his career. Once he admitted in a television broadcast a mistake that could change the course of the championship and for him it was only applause. But Lo Bello had earned this credibility with years of excellent refereeing and spectacular interpretations of the role on the pitch. “An avenger”, defined him in 1956 by one of the most famous sports journalists of the time, Maurizio Barendson.

Born in Syracuse on May 13, 1924 after having practiced athletics (throwing) and football, he embarked on a career as a referee in 1944. He became international in ’58. He has directed 328 matches in Serie A (a record still unbeaten) and 93 international matches, 34 of which between national A. At the international level Lo Bello (who represented Italy at the 1966 World Cup) has refereed virtually everything, except the World Championship and that of the European Championships.
