Lewandowski twice early and Ronaldo once late

In the Champions League, FC Bayern Munich is single-mindedly storming towards the round of 16. At 5-0 (2-0) on Wednesday against Dynamo Kiev, Robert Lewandowski continued his series of hits in Europe’s premier class with a converted hand penalty (12th minute) and after a perfect pass from Thomas Müller (27th).

The Pole had already scored twice in the 3-0 opener against FC Barcelona. 25,000 spectators were able to cheer for further goals by Serge Gnabry (68th), Leroy Sané (74th) and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting (87th) in the Munich arena.

“We did it relatively well, in the end we showed our dominance again,” said the strong Sané. Leon Goretzka raved about a “nice football evening”, on which “a lot was good”.

In their first European home game in front of an audience in almost two years, the vastly superior team of coach Julian Nagelsmann consolidated the leading position in Group E. In three weeks, Bayern can move closer to group victory at Benfica Lisbon, while the Portuguese also clearly defeated Barcelona with 3 : 0.

The second game between Wolfsburg and FC Sevilla was much more exciting. In the end there was a point for the Bundesliga club, as was the case with the 0-0 start in Lille. After Renato Steffen’s goal in the 48th minute, VfL was even close to victory, but the pressure from the guests increased in the closing stages.

Nevertheless, the equalization came about quite happily. After a duel in the Wolfsburg penalty area, the referee went to video evidence and, to the horror of the hosts, decided on a penalty for Sevilla and yellow-red for Josuha Guilavogui. Ivan Rakitic didn’t miss the chance and made it 1: 1.

In the parallel game of Group G, RB Salzburg defeated OSC Lille 2-1. Again, the Austrians were awarded two penalties, in the first game in Seville there were even three – but two of which were missed. This time the Salzburg team kept their nerve in the person of Karim Adeyemi and so came to their first victory in this group stage.

In a high-class duel at times, Juventus defeated defending champion Chelsea FC 1-0. European champion Federico Chiesa scored the goal of the day just ten seconds after the restart. Juve are leading Group H with two wins, and the Italians are doing much better in the Champions League than in the domestic Serie A.

The most dramatic game was on Wednesday at the venerable Old Trafford, where Manchester United were actually the weaker team against Villarreal CF, but won in the end. And of course it was Cristiano Ronaldo who scored the acclaimed 2-1 winner in stoppage time … TSP / dpa
