Danish doubles in Potsdam

“We were surprised that Turbine wanted us both,” says Karen Holmgaard from Denmark. “At this level there are few clubs that are looking for a left-back and a midfielder at the same time.” She and her twin sister Sara have been playing together continuously since the age of five. So since January now in Potsdam.

They cannot say whether one would have made it to the professional level without the other. “Probably not because we always encouraged each other to train even harder,” says Sara. The move to Potsdam was a real leap again. The Bundesliga is better, the stadiums are full and football is more intense. Exactly the challenge they both wanted.

Not just a change on the pitch

“It’s been a good nine months. We learned a lot on and off the pitch. It’s a different culture than Denmark, ”says Karen. Dealing is tougher, but both have always felt welcome, even if they hardly speak any German so far.

The twins also live together in Potsdam. “We always support each other. I help Sara and she helps me, ”says Karen. “Sometimes one is better and sometimes the other. But it’s just football. ”

It bothers them a little that they are always seen together. “Sometimes it is hard. We’re also two individuals, two players with different personalities, ”says Sara. Besides, it’s not that difficult to tell the difference between the two. Karen is a few inches taller. She is right-footed, Sara is left-footed.

Both are aware that at some point in their careers they will have to make a difficult decision: “We always played together and we are very grateful for it. We enjoy the time, but we also know that the time will come when we have to part, ”says Karen.

On Sunday in the home game against SGS Essen

Both still belong to the regular staff of Turbine’s trainer Sofian Chahed. He bet on the same first team in all three Bundesliga games, with moderate success. Only against the newcomer from Jena it was enough to get a three. “All the players are fit and I’m excited to see who starts,” says Sara with a view to Sunday’s home game against SGS Essen (1pm on Magentasport).

This summer, the SGS, traditionally the talent factory of the Bundesliga, had to accept painful departures again. With the two national players Jana Feldkamp (TSG Hoffenheim) and Nicole Anyomi (Eintracht Frankfurt), two great talents left the club again, but Essen is still a good team, says Sara. “It will be a tough game, but we are ready”.
