(ANSA) – PORTO CERVO, MAY 31 – The Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta kicks off today, an event organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, scheduled until Saturday 4 June, which opens the sailing season in Porto Cervo.

Eighteen boats entered the 15th edition, the first with the new title sponsor Armani, ready to sail among the islands of the La Maddalena Archipelago. Today the two schooners present, Mariette of 1915 and Shenandoah of Sark, put on a show at sea, engaged in a friendly sail between Capo Ferro and Isola dei Monaci to then continue beyond the Isola delle Bisce.

Mariette of 1915, a gold-rigged schooner built in Rhode Island by Nathanael Herreshoff, returns to Porto Cervo after the last participation in the Superyacht Regatta in 2019, while for Shenandoah of Sark – which together with Kenora will take part in the social events of the event without competing – this is the first time. This historic sailing ship, the most impressive of the fleet with its 42 meters in length, was built in 1902 by the renowned Townsend & Downey shipyard and in 2007 took part in the Veteran Boat Rally in Porto Cervo.

After the third consecutive victory in 2019, the WallyCento Magic Carpet Cubed is back. Participants in the Giorgio Armani Superyacht Regatta also include the two 33-meter Inoui and Win Win, the Wally 94 ‘Magic Blue, the 32-meter Ribelle sloop, the Southern Wind Morgana, built in 2020 which competes for the first time in the event. The new entry will be the Wally 93 ‘Bullitt, one of the most recent yachts of the yard, which debuted in May during the PalmaVela. Also present was Spirit Yachts 111 Geist which, just two years after her debut, in 2021 was named Sailboat of the Year at the World Superyacht Awards in Monaco.

In the Multihull category, the Gunboat 68 Highland Fling 17, winner of the last edition of the Superyacht Regatta, and the custom Allegra designed by Nigel Irens and Nauta Yacht Design will compete again. (HANDLE).
