In the 0-0 friendly match with Uruguay, the US players wore an orange armband in support of the campaign for stricter control over arms sales. The stance following the letter sent to Congress asking for “stronger gun laws”, after the numerous shootings in recent weeks.
The US House of Representatives is expected to vote for a bill on the matter in the coming days.
US national team coach Gregg Berhalter said he was “really proud” of the team. “Sometimes it’s easy to get involved in our little world and what we’re doing, then you forget what’s going on in the outside world – this group certainly didn’t,” he said. In the letter, signed by players and staff, the team pleaded with Congress to “stand with the majority of Americans who support stricter gun laws.” Messages also from the NBA, and in particular from Race-2 of the Finals for the title between Golden State and Boston: the basketball players wore t-shirts with the words ‘End Gun Violence’, before of the match.
