Marcelo tears, ‘goodbye Real Madrid but I still do not retire’

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 13 – Marcelo Vieira’s farewell to Real Madrid after 15 years and 25 titles is broken with tears. “It was a wonderful adventure. Today I leave here as the footballer who has won the most titles in the history of the best team in the world,” said the Brazilian full-back in the press conference organized by Florentino Perez’s club. Among the participants in the farewell ceremony in Valdebebas, the sports center of the merengues, there are teammates, Perez himself, as well as Carlo Ancelotti and Raul, who today is in charge of the club’s B team.

But Marcelo insisted he has no plans to retire yet. The Brazilian defender, aged 34 in May, will be released later this month. Among the 25 trophies won wearing Real Madrid’s camiseta blanca, there are five Champions League, six Spanish leagues and two Copa del Rey titles.

“It’s not goodbye, I don’t feel like I’m leaving Madrid. If you don’t give me a ticket, when I ask you, there will be problems,” joked the Brazilian. Marcelo also said that he is ready to play against Real Madrid in the future: he has not ruled out the possibility of going to play for one of the greats of European football. “I don’t think playing against Madrid will be a problem. I’m very professional.” Marcelo racked up his fifth Champions League title last month when Real defeated Liverpool in Paris to win the 14th European Cup. But he didn’t play in the final. Ancelotti preferred the Frenchman Ferland Mendy, starter for this season. In fact, Marcelo has only made five starts as a starter in the La Liga. “This season I barely played but I felt useful even without playing. I felt the responsibility,” said Marcelo.

“A moment before I was furious with Ancelotti the next day we were exchanging kisses and hugs.” Marcelo joined Real Madrid in 2007. In these years of his career with the Blancos he has made 545 appearances. “You are irreplaceable,” said Florentino Perez. “Be proud of your outstanding career.” (HANDLE).
