Transgender athletes, Coe “fairness is not negotiable”

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 21 – “We have always sought negotiation, without stigmatizing. But when the time comes to choose between equity and inclusion, I am still on the side of equity, which for me is not negotiable”. World Athletics president Lord Sebastian Coe, guest of the World Swimming Championships in Budapest, asked the BBC to suggest that athletics could soon align with FINA and exclude transgender athletes from competitions, at least from international ones.

“The integrity of women’s sport is really important and we cannot have a generation of girls who think there is no future for them in sport – added Coe – So we have a responsibility … to maintain the primacy and integrity of women’s competitions is absolutely vital. This is why we have been at the forefront in presenting those regulations that allow for a level playing field as much as possible. “

“We have always believed that biology has the better of gender and we will continue to review our regulations in line with this principle – concluded Coe – We will follow science”.
