Tennis: Wimbledon; Vavassori passes the qualifications

(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 23 – Only one of the three Azzurri involved in the decisive round of the Wimbledon qualifiers managed to beat his opponent, earning the right to participate in the third slam of 2022. This is Andrea Vavassori from Turin, n.255 of the ranking, who managed to beat 3-1 (6-7, 7-6, 6-1, 7-6) the Czech Zdenek Kolar, 120 Atp and therefore will participate for the first time in the London Major, which quest year does not award points valid for the rankings but offers a prize pool that exceeds 40 million pounds.

Nothing to do, however, for Salvatore Caruso and for the veteran Andreas Seppi. The former was defeated 3-1 (6-4, 6-7, 6-3, 6-3) by the Spanish Bernabe Zapata Miralles, 90 Atp and first seeded in the qualifiers, while the South Tyrolean lost with the same score (6-1, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6) with the Slovakian Lukas Klein. The 38-year-old from Caldaro was aiming for 17th participation in the main draw of Wimbledon where he boasts the round of 16 in 2013 as his best result.

The men’s tournament will see, in addition to Vavassori, Matteo Berrettini, Jannik Sinner, Lorenzo Sonego, Fabio Fognini and Lorenzo Musetti. The women’s tournament will instead see the participation of Camila Giorgi, Martina Trevisan, Lucia Bronzetti, Jasmine Paolini, Elisabetta Cocciaretto. No other blue has been added to these five from the qualifiers. (HANDLE).
