In the end Gianmarco Tamberi made it, winning the tricolor jersey of national high jump champion after the ‘extra time’ against Marco Fassinotti, with whom he had closed the top match at 2.23 with a ‘clear path’ and then three errors each at 2.26.
But then, unlike what happened atTokyo Olympics, he had not made an agreement with his rival (it seems it was Fassinotti who rejected the hypothesis of the shared title) and therefore the two had gone to extra time. Both Tamberi and Fassinotti retreated to 2.26, then dropped to 2.23 and both exceeded this measure, climbed back to 2.26 and this time ‘Gimbo’ managed to prevail. Without then shaking hands with his rival, as is usually done in these cases, and indeed he let slip a comment against his rival. As if to make it clear that he would have preferred the title at par, saving precious energy in view of the next matches, first and foremost the World Cup.
