South African Caster Semenya, absent from major athletics events since 2017, is expected to return to the World Championships in Eugene (July 15-24) in the 5000m, according to the list of registered athletes published today by World Athletics. The two-time Olympic champion in the 800 meters could thus return to the international stage after her last victory at the World Championships in 2017 but not in the 800 meters, her specialty. Semenya is registered for the women’s 5000 meters, a specialty in which she can compete under Iaaf rules that prohibit women with conditions that cause a high level of natural testosterone – like Semenya – from running distances between 400 and 1500 meters.
Initially not enrolled in the World Championships, for not having exceeded the minimum in the 5000m, Semenya – according to L’Equipe – took advantage of the defections of several top ranked athletes.
