Football: Fred greets at the Maracana in front of 63 thousand fans

(ANSA) – RIO DE JANEIRO, JUL 10 – At 38 and after 19 in his career, Brazilian striker Fred said goodbye to professionalism with a match in front of Fluminense fans gathered in the legendary Maracana stadium. Entering the field in place of the German Argentine Cano, in the 78th minute of the match against Ceara, for the 16th day of the Brazilian championship, Fred ended his career with a victory, 2-1 for the “Flu” and the 382nd presence with the jersey of the carioca club. All in front of 63,707 spectators, the second best turnout in the Brazilian football temple since its renovation in 2013, for the 2014 World Cup.

After the final whistle, Fred – born Frederico Chaves Guedes – cycled along the stadium track by bicycle, the same one with which he had covered the 600 km that separate Belo Horizonte from Rio de Janeiro in June 2020, when he announced his return at the Fluminense.

Born on 3 October 1983 in Teofilo Otoni, in the state of Minas Gerais (south-east), Fred made his professional debut with America Mineiro in January 2003. He then wore the shirts of Cruzeiro, Fluminense and Atlético Mineiro. He also played in Europe, with Olympique Lyon, from 2005 to 2009. (ANSA).
