(ANSA) – ROME, JUL 11 – Roger Federer and Serena Williams leave the world rankings, two sacred monsters of tennis, who from today no longer appear in the ATP and WTA lists, after losing their last points. The Swiss, absent due to a knee injury from the fields since the 2021 edition of Wimbledon, where he had reached the quarterfinals, had entered the ATP ranking in 1997.
Same goes for the 40-year-old American, winner of 23 Grand Slam titles. After a year without playing a singles tournament, Serena Williams failed her return to London grass this year, beaten in the first round by Frenchman Harmony Tan.
For Federer, the return to competition will still have to wait. Celebrated at the Grand Slam in London on 3 July, during a ceremony marking the 100th anniversary of the Center Court, the 40-year-old player said he didn’t think “it would take so long to get back on the circuit”. “The knee hasn’t been kind to me,” he added. In turn, holder of 20 Grand Slam titles, he will return to the Laver Cup in September. He also expressed a desire to play “once again” at Wimbledon. (HANDLE).
