Ukrainian championship resumes in August without an audience

The Ukrainian football championship will resume in August, despite the invasion of Russia which began in late February, Ukraine’s Minister of Youth and Sports announced Monday. The new season of the “Ukrainian football league will start on August 23,” Vadym Gutzeit said on Facebook.
Ukrainian football clubs decided on April 26 to prematurely end the previous season, suspended in February due to the Russian offensive, without designating a champion. Leaders Shakhtar Donetsk was two points clear of Dynamo kyiv when Ukrainian authorities decided to end the season.
Vadym Gutzeit also assured that the matches of the new season will take place on Ukrainian territory, but without spectators and in compliance with the mandatory safety rules. “During the air strikes, matches will be interrupted and players, coaches and staff will have to move quickly to shelter,” said the minister.
