Fencing: World Championships; women’s saber, Passaro and Battiston qualified

(ANSA) – ROME, JUL 17 – On the third day of the 2022 World Championship in Cairo, the last one dedicated to the preliminary stages, Italy completes the mission of qualifying all its athletes to the main draw. This morning, in the women’s saber, in fact, Eloisa Passaro and Michela Battiston have already detached the qualification pass in the group stage.

The two blue of the female saber of the CT Nicola Zanotti therefore reach the companions Rossella Gregorio and Martina Criscio, already qualified by ranking, among the best 64 of the World Cup.

Today also began the men’s foil test, but without the Azzurri involved because the four called up by the Weapon Manager Stefano Cerioni – Daniele Garozzo, Tommaso Marini, Alessio Foconi and Giorgio Avola – are all admitted by right to the key phase of the match which, as for sabers, it is scheduled for Wednesday.

The triptych of preliminary days that saw Italy qualify all six athletes who were not among the top 16 in the world ranking (the swordsmen Michele Gallo and Pietro Torre, the swordsmen Gabriele Cimini and Davide Di Veroli and precisely Eloisa Passaro and Michela Battiston in the women’s saber) to the main draws. All 24 Azzurri flew to Cairo, therefore, will be at the starting line of the key stages of the world championship event.

From tomorrow the medals will be awarded, starting with the individual tests of female sword and male saber. For the Italy of the swordsmen, on the platform from 8.30, the technical commissioner Dario Chiadò will focus on Rossella Fiamingo, Alberta Santuccio, Federica Isola and Mara Navarria. In the competition of the sabers, however, at 10 am, the coach Nicola Zanotti will field Luca Curatoli, Gigi Samele, Michele Gallo and Pietro Torre. (HANDLE).
